India is a popular destination for any rail enthusiast with a healthy choice of train journeys to suit all budgets. Rail expert Ffestiniog Travel can organise tailor made itineraries and also has a 20-day trip, “Hill Stations of the Raj” that combines the three most outstanding railways to the former British Hill stations, all of which still feature steam haulage. Best of all you also get to see the major sights such as the Golden Temple, the Taj Mahal, the Himalayas and the Blue Mountains in the south. If you are after something a bit more luxurious it’s worth considering Kirker Holidays which offers the “Palace on Wheels” trip. This sumptuous train journey starts and finishes in Delhi after taking in the main northern sights. It has 14 carriages, each with four en suite bathrooms and a communal area attended by a butler, as well as two restaurants and a bar. Kirker also offers the “Deccan Odyssey” which runs along the west of India in a lazy circle from Mumbai through Goa and Aurangabad back to Mumbai. It travels overnight and arrives at a new destination each day and has similar facilities to the “Palace on Wheels”, the only exception being a full Ayuvedic Spa on board.
