You have not mentioned what time of year you are travelling, but there a many options to choose from as both rail, ferry and flight options are open to you, if you are travelling during the summer months.
You could take the overnight ferry from Venice either to Igoumenitsa on the Greek mainland, or even disembark and stay on the island of Corfu. There you could avoid the main tourist traps, staying in a small cottage with private plunge pool and stunning views of the Albanian coastline.
You could take the train to the Amalfi coast or the Italian lakes. You could visit more Italian cities or perhaps take the train to Florence and venture into the Tuscan countryside.
Using Italian rail you could also travel down the East coast of Italy to Bari and stay in one of the wonderful 'Masserias', beautiful converted farmhouse hotels, famous in that area.
Alternatively you could take the train into France and stay on the Cote d'Azur.
In fact, your choices are endless!
